MR PAUL MALONE AND HIS HUNGER STRIKE

That this House is appalled at the length of time being taken by the Metropolitan Police, under the supervision of the Police Complaints Authority, to investigate evidence suggesting that Mr Paul Malone, who is serving fifteen years for robbery, is a victim of a miscarriage of justice; is deeply concerned for the health of Mr Malone who on Monday 4th July began a hunger strike on hearing that the results of the police investigation into his case are not due to be released until the end of June 1995, by which time he will have served eight and a half years in prison on charges he has consistently denied; notes that the delay is contrary to the assurance given by the Minister of State at the Home Office to the honourable Member for Liverpool, Broadgreen in a letter dated 9th December 1993 that the investigation is nearing completion; is alarmed at the number of times that the senior investigating officer has been changed during the course of the investigation; calls upon the police, the Police Complaints Authority and Home Office to expedite the process; deplores the circumstances of Mr Malone's transfer from Frankland Prison to Holme House when he was forced to leave behind his belongings; and calls for his immediate return to Frankland.
