Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Nicholas Winterton (Conservative), on Tuesday, 19 April 1994, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 135 members in total.
COMMUNITY RADIO
That this House acknowledges the opportunity provided by community radio to bring people together to share common interests and concerns, develop a sense of belonging and express their local identity; notes with concern the increase in unlicensed local radio broadcasting; observes that the 88 to 105 megaHertz frequencies of the FM band have been largely allocated to national, regional and county wide BBC and independent radio services; believes that the forthcoming allocation by the Radio Authority of the FM spectrum may be the last viable opportunity this century for the expansion of community radio; and would greatly welcome a decision by the Radio Authority to provide sufficient FM spectrum for a tier of low power local radio stations serving neighbourhoods and communities of special interest.
