PRIVATISATION OF THE NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE (No. 2)

That this House recognises the concern that the consultant pathologists retained in the employment of North Hertfordshire NHS Trust will be required to work with and help a private company in its provision of pathology services, which will inevitably give rise to conflict of interests between commercial thrust and professional standards and judgement which would have far-reaching implications not only for the standard of future provision of pathology services but also the future of the health service in North Hertfordshire; condemns this as first step to privatise the NHS; and calls on the Secretary of State to take the necessary action to stop this deal going through in order to prevent any irreparable damage to the fabric of the NHS which might ensue, and to institute an independent public inquiry into the manner and conduct by which the North Hertfordshire NHS Trust arrived at this decision, prior to the findings of the strategic review of pathology services being accepted by the Government with particular reference to the public accountability of a Trust and managerial accountability of the Trust's senior managers.
