Oral question asked in the House of Lords, by Lord Maginnis of Drumglass (Crossbench). It was answered by Lord Rooker (Labour) on Thursday, 10 November 2005.
Northern Ireland: School Closures
- Question
- What impact the closure of primary schools in Northern Ireland with an enrolment of 40 pupils or fewer is having on small towns and villages in the Province.
- Answer
-
My Lords, over the three years 2003 to 2006, nine primary schools with fewer than 40 pupils will have closed in Northern Ireland. In considering school closure proposals, the Department of Education aims to minimise the impact on each local community and consideration is given to a range of factors including suitable alternative school places, travelling distances for pupils and community considerations. However, with falling rolls some schools decline to a point where it is not in the best educational interests of the children for the schools to continue. That has to be an overriding priority.
