Azerbaijan: Desecration of Religious Memorials
- Question
- Whether they will make representations to UNESCO concerning the destruction and desecration by Azerbaijan of ancient Armenian churches and artefacts.
- Answer
-
The Government are aware of and concerned by Armenian reports of the destruction and desecration of certain graveyards in Azerbaijan. We deplore the desecration of any religious memorial or gravestone. Such acts, wherever they are committed, bring only dishonour on the perpetrators. We understand that the Armenians have already raised this matter with UNESCO. We have no plans to raise this matter ourselves.
