Before they are appointed, deputy lieutenants are required to give a written assurance that they will, to the best of their ability, assist in the performance of any public duty which may be laid upon the Lord Lieutenant. There are no residency requirements for a high sheriff but the same rules are applied as for deputy lieutenants.
