Illiteracy

- To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how many people over the age of 65 years are deemed to be illiterate in (a) former mining areas and (b) England.

The Department for Education and Skills does not collect statistics on the literacy levels of people over the age of 65 years.The Department does collect statistics on learners starting Skills for Life courses?adult literacy, numeracy and language courses. In the academic year 2003/04 around 18,000 adults aged 60 to 69 and 9,000 adults aged 70 and above in England started Skills for Life courses.
