Oral question asked in the House of Lords, by Lord Renton (Conservative). It was answered on Thursday, 18 May 2006.
Parliament Square: Demonstrations and Placards
- Question
- My Lords, does the noble Baroness agree that Parliament Square is one of the most historic and elegant places in the United Kingdom and that the various placards placed there from time to time diminish its importance?
- Answer
-
My Lords, I certainly agree with the noble Lord, Lord Renton, that it is one of the most elegant squares in the country—indeed, in the world—and we now have appropriate parliamentary provisions to deal with what some would say was the desecration of the square. But we have to balance issues and to work within the law, which we are currently seeking to do.
