Local Authority Electoral Reviews
- Question
- To ask the hon. Member for Gosport, representing the Speaker's Committee on the Electoral Commission when the Electoral Commission will publish its conclusions following last year's consultations on the Commission's policies and procedures for the conduct of local authority electoral reviews in England.
- Answer
-
The Electoral Commission informs me that it published its conclusions on 3 July 2006. The aim of electoral reviews is to ensure that, within each local authority area, the number of electors represented by each councillor elected to the council is as nearly as possible the same, taking into account local circumstances. In addition to proposing a number of procedural changes to the review process, the Commission has also proposed certain changes to legislation. Details are set out in its findings document, copies of which have been sent to all Members and placed in the Library of the House.
