Tuberculosis

- To ask the Secretary of State for Health what research her Department has commissioned into new anti-TB drugs; and when that research is expected to be concluded.

The Department funds research into the development of vaccines and on diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB).The principal sponsor of research into the development of anti-TB drugs is the Department for International Development (DfID). DfID is currently supporting such research by funding the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development. In the period 2005 to 2008 DflD’s contribution to the Alliance will amount to £6.5 million.At present, the Alliance has two drugs that are being tested in clinical trials. Subject to the outcome of those trials, it is expected that they will be available for routine use by 2012.
