Business question from Keith Vaz (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 16 November 2006. It occurred during Business statement on Business of the House.
Business of the House
First, I congratulate my right hon. Friend on winning the Fenner Brockway medal for 2006. It is well deserved. When can we have a debate on the operation of the Judicial Appointments Commission? It has been in existence for six months. We were told that the new commission would be independent of the Department for Constitutional Affairs, but from replies to parliamentary questions that I have tabled, it appears that the vast majority of staff have been seconded from the DCA. Recently, advertisements have gone out for new High Court judges. It is important that we review the operation of the JAC. May we have a debate on that as soon as possible?
