Stray Dogs

- To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps his Department has taken to ensure that police authorities are fulfilling their obligations to receive stray dogs under the Environmental Protection Act 1990; and what sanctions may be imposed on police authorities who fail to fulfil their obligations.
- Answer

Under section 150 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 local authorities and the police have a shared responsibility to receive stray dogs from members of the public. It is a matter for the chief officer of the individual force concerned to determine the operational priority attached to activities within his or her force area.
