Alcoholic Drinks: Misuse

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Health whether her Department has conducted comparative research on the cost to the NHS of treating the effects of addiction to alcohol and tobacco.
Answer

The Department, in partnership with the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA), published Models of Care for Alcohol Misusers in November 2005. Models of Care was informed by the review of the effectiveness of treatment for alcohol problems commissioned by the NTA. Both publications have been placed in the Library and are available at:"www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/Alcoholmisuse/Alcoholmisusegeneralinformation/DH_4130659""www.nta.nhs.uk/publications/documents/nta_review_alcohol_problems_fullreport__2006_alcohol2.pdf"The Health Technology Assessment Programme, part of the Department's National Institute for Health Research, is currently supporting two studies looking in part at the cost effectiveness of therapies designed to help people stop smoking. These are:"a systematic review of the effectiveness and an economic analysis of cut down to quit with nicotine replacement therapies; and""relapse prevention in NHS stop smoking services: a review of current practice, potential effectiveness and cost effectiveness."
