Young Offender Institutions: Suicide

Question
To ask the Minister of State, Ministry of Justice how many (a) suicides and (b) incidents of self-harm took place at each young offender institution in (i) 2002-03, (ii) 2003-04, (iii) 2004-05, (iv) 2005-6 and (v) 2006-07.

¹ Self-inflicted deaths include all deaths where it appears the individual acted specifically to take their own life, not only those that received a suicide or open verdict at inquest.

The exact information requested at (b) is not available. Self-harm figures are derived from a national recording system of each incident of self-harm in prison, the majority of which are minor, and can be considered only as an estimate.
