Police Custody

- To ask the Minister of State, Ministry of Justice what the range is of the nightly cost of police cells used by her Department and the Prison Service; and which such cells are the most expensive.

The estimated average cost of holding a prisoner in a police cell is £385 per night. Actual cost depends on the size of the units made available, the length of time they are required and any additional costs incurred. Police forces invoice NOMS for the use of police cells in arrears. Not all invoices have yet been received and so the full range of costs is not yet known.
