Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills how much was spent by his Department on taxis in the last 12 months.

Answer: Details of expenditure on taxis incurred by the Department over the last financial year are set out as follows:"2006-07: £268,857.79"The expenditure is based on staff travel claims and approved invoices received from taxi companies paid via the Department’s Integrated Financial Information System.This figure does not include expenditure for taxi fares incurred abroad or claims by staff that do not have access to the on-line system. To extract this information would involve disproportionate cost.The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) was established under Machinery of Government changes on 28 June 2007. This response only related to those areas of responsibility held by its predecessor the Department for Education and Skills.
