Flooding

Question: asked Her Majesty's Government:Further to the Statement by Lord Rooker on 23 July on flooding (Official Report, cols. 564–74), whether they will introduce legislation to give the Environment Agency greater flood prevention powers.

Answer: The Government’s strategy, Making Space for Water, encourages the adoption of a more holistic approach to flood risk. This means that the Environment Agency is to be given responsibility for taking a strategic overview of flooding from all sources, including rivers, sea, surface water and ground water in inland and coastal areas. The Government have announced their findings on the form this will take for coastal management and are currently consulting on inland areas.
