Databases: Genetics

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many requests have been made to chief constables for the removal of (a) DNA and (b) police national computer records since 2006; and how many of these requests have been granted.

Answer: There are no central records of the number of requests made to chief officers for the removal of DNA, fingerprints and police national computer records and the number which have been granted since 2006. Under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, the decision on whether to agree to a request from an individual to have their DNA profile, fingerprints and associated records removed from police databases lies with the chief officer of the force which took the DNA sample and fingerprint records.
