Witnesses: Protection

- (2) how many UK citizens are in witness protection programmes; and how many have been in programmes in each of the last 10 years.

Witness protection programmes are one of a number of measures taken by police forces to provide support to witnesses. A review of national provision in 2004 estimated that such programmes cost in the region of £22 million per annum. However, because of the operational sensitivity of this area of work, details of their programmes and witnesses assisted cannot be disclosed.
