Young Offender Institutions: Education

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what percentage of those in each (a) young offender institution and (b) secure training centre were in education at the latest date for which figures are available.
Answer

The Prison Service does not centrally collate education data at prisoner level. The following table shows the provisional average number of hours spent in educational activity per week per prisoner in young offender and juvenile institutions in 2007-08. Young offenders held in prisons categorised as adult are not included.

Each of the four secure training centres (STCs) in accordance with STC Rules 1998 ensure that each trainee participates in education or training courses for at least 25 hours a week, except when on authorised absence such us attending court appearances or sickness.
