Taxis

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how much was claimed in expenses for taxi travel by officials from (a) his Department and (b) its executive agencies in (i) 2006-07, (ii) 2005-06, (iii) 2004-05, (iv) 2003-04 and (v) 2002-03; and if he will make a statement.

Answer

From information held centrally by the core-Department's financial system the VAT inclusive expenditure on taxis for the financial years 2006-07 and 2007-08 is as follows:

2006-07	268,103.95
2007-08	346,457.63

DEFRA's total departmental spending in 2007-08 was some £3.7 billion. Information for financial years prior to 2006-07 could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.The Department requires any use of taxis to be appropriate to business needs, represent value for money and follow civil service rules for the use of money.
