Rolling Stock

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport pursuant to the statement of 12 February 2009, Official Report, columns 1531-44, on new trains (investment), if he will make representations to his Japanese counterpart on the market access for the export of trains and rolling stock to Japan.
Answer

The European Commission has highlighted the difficulties of entry for non-Japanese companies into the Japanese rail market. The Foreign Office continues to work with the European Commission—which is taking the lead in this area—to raise the issue of barriers to market entry with the Japanese government.
