- To ask the Minister of State, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills how many small businesses there were in (a) England, (b) the South East and (c) Lewes constituency in each of the last five years.

Estimates of the total number of small¹ businesses from 2003 to 2008 in England and the South East of England are shown in the following table."¹ Small businesses are defined as private sector enterprises with fewer than 50 employees."

The number of businesses in England and the South East has increased by 19 per cent. and 13 per cent. respectively between the start of 2003 and 2008.Estimates of the total number of small businesses in the Lewes Constituency are not available.
