Young Offenders: Location

- To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many and what proportion of young people in young offender institutions aged (a) between 10 and 12, (b) between 13 and 15, (c) 16 or 17 and (d) between 18 and 20 years old were held over 20 miles away from their previous homes in each year since 1997.

The following table shows the number and percentage of 15 to 20-year-old male and female offenders in young offender institutions (YOIs) who were detained over 20 miles from their home area, in each of the last five years. Data prior to 2005 is not available in the format requested.All prisoners are asked for details of their home address on first reception to prison and on discharge from prison. Approximately 60 per cent. of prisoners (both male and female) are shown to have given a recognised address.If no address is given, various proxies are used to determine distance from home, including next-of-kin address and committal court address.Those aged 10 to 14 are not held in YOIs.
