Legal Aid

- To ask Her Majesty's Government how many foreign nationals in Iraq and Afghanistan have brought cases in the European Court of Human Rights against Her Majesty's armed forces using legal aid paid for by the United Kingdom.

Legal aid in England and Wales and Northern Ireland is administered by the Legal Services Commission (LSC) and the Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission (NILSC) respectively. No foreign nationals in Iraq and Afghanistan have been funded by the LSC or NILSC to bring cases against Her Majesty's Armed Forces in the European Court of Human Rights, nor have any payments been made to Phil Shiner or his associates in respect of representation in such cases. Legal aid in Scotland is a devolved matter for the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Executive.
