Multiple Occupation: Licensing

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government how many houses in each local authority area were licensed under (a) mandatory, (b) additional and (c) selective licensing in each of the last five years.

Answer: The number of mandatory licences for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) for those local authorities that have returned figures to Communities and Local Government from July 2008 to July 2010 are shown in a table which has been deposited in the Library of the House. Figures on licensing of HMOs for earlier years and on the number of additional and selective licensed HMOs are not available centrally.The figures are as reported by the local authority and there are concerns about their quality and robustness. Definitive numbers of licensed HMOs are available directly from the registers held by local authorities.
