General Practitioners

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the oral statement of 12 July 2010, Official Report, columns 661-63, on the NHS White Paper, whether GP consortia will be able to make arrangements for their patients to receive medication on the NHS which the NHS does not currently provide.

Answer: The White Paper, Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS published on 12 July 2010, sets out our proposals for transforming the quality of commissioning by devolving decision-making to local consortia of general practitioner practices.We will be considering the issue of whether consortia will be able to make arrangements for their patients to receive medication not currently funded by the national health service as we develop the detail of the new commissioning arrangements.
