Constituencies: Wales

Question
To ask the Deputy Prime Minister pursuant to the oral statement of 5 July 2010, Official Report, columns 23-5W, on political and constitutional reform, whether the implementation of his proposals for boundary changes to Parliamentary constituencies in Wales will be dependent on the outcome of the proposed referendum on the transfer of legislative powers under Part 4 of the Government of Wales Act 2006.
Answer

The Government's proposals for more equal constituency sizes for the House of Commons will ensure that votes have more equal weight. The implementation of these proposals will not be dependent on the outcome of the proposed referendum under the Government of Wales Act 2006. The Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill does take account of the link between parliamentary constituencies and Welsh Assembly Government constituencies; the link between the two will be broken so that fewer parliamentary constituencies in future would not lead to a concomitant reduction in the size of the Assembly.
