Dogs: Animal Breeding

- To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what steps she plans to take to tackle the trade in puppy and farmed dogs; and whether she plans to bring forward proposals to ban the sale of puppies in pet shops.
- Answer

I consider that the existing legislation provides the necessary protection for the welfare of dogs, including the commercial breeding and selling of dogs, which is subject to licensing, as well as the more general welfare provisions in the Animal Welfare Act 2006. There are no proposals to ban the sale of puppies from pet shops.
