- Question
- To ask the Secretary of State for Health pursuant to the statement of 14 October 2010, Official Report, columns 505-06, on public bodies reform, what the functions of the Gene Therapy Advisory Committee are; which of these functions are to be retained; and which bodies he proposes to have responsibility for fulfilling these functions.
- Answer
-
The Gene Therapy Advisory Committee (GTAC) oversees the ethical conduct of stem cell and gene therapy clinical trials in the United Kingdom and previously provided advice to Ministers on gene and stem cell therapies.Following the advisory non-departmental public bodies (ANDPBs) review it has been decided that GTAC no longer needs to report and provide advice directly to Ministers. The review concluded that its Research Ethics Committee statutory functions would be transferred to the National Research Ethics Service.
