Afghanistan: Mining

- To ask the Secretary of State for International Development whether he has had recent discussions on the Aynak mines in Afghanistan; and if he will make a statement.

I discussed the Aynak mine with the Afghan Minister for Mines during a meeting in June of this year. The contract for the Aynak copper mine in Afghanistan was awarded to a Chinese company, the Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) in 2008 following a tender process overseen by the World Bank on behalf of the Government of Afghanistan.
