Afghanistan: Christianity

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent reports he has received on the treatment of Christians in Afghanistan; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: We are aware of recent reports concerning Christian converts from Islam. Our embassy in Kabul is monitoring these events closely.The Government strongly support the right to freedom of religion or belief. We are working to support all individuals who face discrimination and persecution on the basis of religion, including Christians, wherever they are in the world. Article Two of the Afghan constitution provides for freedom of religion, and we expect the Afghan Government to fully implement this. The international community have a regular dialogue with the Afghan Government on human rights, including on the need to ensure the security of all Afghans, regardless of religion.
