National Coal Board: Compensation
- Question
- To ask Her Majesty’s Government by when all outstanding compensation for miners and their descendants in respect of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will be paid.
- Answer
-
The department has paid circa £2.3 billion under the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) scheme to former miners and their families. Total claims received under the COPD scheme was 592,000 of which only 134 claims remain to be finalised and only 11 claims are awaiting offer in full and final settlement or denial. We expect all outstanding COPD claims against the department to be settled by mid-2011.
