Written question asked by Lord Stoddart of Swindon (Independent Labour), in the House of Lords. It was answered by Earl Howe (Conservative) on Monday, 20 December 2010.

Smoking

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the answer by Earl Howe on 30 November (Official Report, col. 1381) that ““smoking still claims 80,000 lives a year””, what clinical evidence or death certification records they have to support this statement; and whether they will place a copy of that evidence in the Library of the House.
Answer

The number 80,000 comes from available data collated in Statistics on Smoking: England, 2010, which is publicly available. This gives details of the methodology employed by the department in providing data on hospital admissions and deaths due to smoking. A copy of this publication has already been placed in the Library.
