Smoking
- Question
- To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the answer by Earl Howe on 30 November (Official Report, col. 1381) that ““smoking still claims 80,000 lives a year””, what clinical evidence or death certification records they have to support this statement; and whether they will place a copy of that evidence in the Library of the House.
- Answer
-
The number 80,000 comes from available data collated in Statistics on Smoking: England, 2010, which is publicly available. This gives details of the methodology employed by the department in providing data on hospital admissions and deaths due to smoking. A copy of this publication has already been placed in the Library.
