Falkland Islands: Minefields

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government when they anticipate all minefields and sites of unexploded munitions on the Falkland Islands will be cleared.
Answer

The UK is obliged under international treaty to clear the Falkland Islands of anti-personnel landmines only by 2019. A pilot project in 2009-10 cleared 1,246 mines from four minefields. A further pilot project will start in late 2011 using land release techniques on Stanley Common.
