Olympic Games 2012: Torch

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is the schedule of the Olympic torch when it is taken to the north-west; and whether it will be passing through Chorley, Lancashire.

Answer: The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is responsible for the Olympic torch relay. On 18 May LOCOG announced the 66 evening celebrations and six of the island visits. The schedule of evening celebration events for the north-west is as follows: Chester (29 May); Bolton (31 May); Liverpool (1 June); Isle of Man (2 June); Carlisle (20 June); Bowness-on-Windermere (21 June); Blackpool (22 June); and Manchester (23 June). LOCOG will now proceed with the detailed planning of the route for the morning and afternoons of each day, to ensure that the torch comes within an hour's journey of 95 per cent of the UK population. This will be done in consultation with stakeholders across the north-west, including local authorities, with the route to be finalised and announced later this year.
