Sudan: Politics and Government

Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will discuss with his South African counterpart that country's involvement in the demilitarisation of the Abyei region of Sudan.
Answer

The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Richmond (Yorks) (Mr Hague), and his South African counterpart, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, discussed Sudan, including Abyei, at the recent UK-South Africa bilateral forum. There have also been ongoing discussions between British Ministers and ex-President Thabo Mbeki in his Chair of the African Union Higher Implementation Panel, which is helping to mediate between the two parties to the comprehensive peace agreement.
