Justice: Legal Fees

- To ask Her Majesty’s Government what was the cost in compensation and legal fees of unlawful detention actions in 2010–11.

In 2010-11 the Ministry of Justice paid out a total of £283,509 in compensation to prisoners as a result of unlawful detention civil litigation claims against the Prison Service. A claimant's legal fees may take several months to finalise and some are not paid in the same financial year as the compensation. The Ministry of Justice's legal fees are swept up in monthly bills covering all types of litigation and the total cost of each case could only be identified at disproportionate cost.
