EU: Environment Council

Question
To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Statement by Lord Henley on 5 July (WS 9) on matters discussed at the Environment Council on 21 June, whether the cost implications for the public sector, the water industry and commerce and industry were taken into account before agreements or prospective agreements were made.
Answer

On 21 June the EU Environment Council adopted conclusions that welcomed the Commission's intention to propose an EU response to water challenges in 2012, by means of its Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Water Resources. At this stage, no decisions were taken that had cost implications for member states. We will assess the full cost implications as necessary once the Commission provides details of the proposed actions.
