Venezuela: Human Rights

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations his Department has made to the government of Venezuela on (a) human rights and (b) compliance with international law.

Answer: We regularly discuss human rights issues with the Government of Venezuela, both bilaterally and through the European Union (EU). In the last year, we have worked with the Venezuelan Government and Venezuelan civil society on areas of mutual interest such as police reform and good governance. Venezuela is due to be the subject of a Universal Periodic Review of its human rights record at the UN Human Rights Council in October. Venezuela has ratified the main international human rights treaties and we monitor its compliance with them, as with all countries.
