Government Departments: Research and Data
- Question
- To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Henley on 21 June (WA 279), what was the variation agreed in the project ““Investigation of the risk of transmission of typical forms of scrapie to humans””; and for what reason.
- Answer
-
The department does not fund a project titled, ““Investigation of the risk of transmission of typical forms of scrapie to humans””. It does however fund a project titled, ““Investigation of the risk of transmission of atypical forms of scrapie to humans””. This project was designed to provide evidence on the relative risk of atypical scrapie to human and animal health. Preliminary results indicated additional work was required to provide this evidence and fully address the relative risk of atypical scrapie. The variation to the contract resulted in an extended end date and an increase of just under £400,000 to the total cost of the project to the department.
