Libya: UN Resolutions

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with (a) his counterparts in (i) France and (ii) the US and (b) the Libyan National Transitional Council on the inclusion of women in the Paris conference and follow-up meetings in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.

Answer: [holding answer 11 October 2011]: The Prime Minister emphasised the importance the Government attaches to women's rights in his speech to the UN General Assembly on the 22 September. The Government have stressed to the National Transitional Council repeatedly the importance of establishing an inclusive interim government that includes women and ensures their full participation in a new Libyan society. The Government are committed to their obligations under UNSCR 1325, and are working to determine what bilateral support the UK can provide the new Libyan Government.
