India: Overseas Aid

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what recent work his Department has undertaken in Orissa, India; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: The Department for International Development's recent work in Orissa concentrates on two priorities:"improving poor people's health and nutrition through the state health sector reform programme; and""supporting disadvantaged communities to obtain public services, social entitlements and combat discrimination through our civil society support programmes."Our health sector support has on an average prevented, 3,000 infant deaths annually since 2007 and, helped 521,000 women deliver in a health facility in 2010-11. Our civil society programmes will benefit one million socially excluded people by 2015.
