Iraq: Trade Unions

- To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent assessment he has made of the position of trade unions in Iraq; and if he will make a statement.

The UK continues to promote the importance of an active civil society in Iraq, of which trade unions play an important part. New draft labour laws are currently under review in Iraq, including those on freedom of association and collective bargaining. British embassy officials in Baghdad have in the past urged the Government of Iraq to recognise the important role played by trade unions. We will continue to do this where appropriate.
