- Question
- To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Howell of Guildford on 13 December (WA 232), whether they also believe that greater freedom of the media is in Turkey's own interests.
- Answer
-
The Government believe that greater freedom of the media is strongly in Turkey's interests. A free media and freedom of opinion and expression are fundamental to ensuring that citizens can exercise their full democratic rights. Turkey’s European Union (EU) accession is conditional upon realisation of the economic, political and human rights guaranteed to all EU citizens.
