Academies

Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Education what responsibility Academy schools without post-16 provision will have to ensure their graduating students remain in full-time education when the school leaving age rises; and if he will make a statement.

Answer: We are raising the age until which all young people must participate in education or training to 17 in 2013 and 18 in 2015.All schools, including Academies, have a key role in supporting young people to make a successful transition to positive outcomes post-16. To encourage them to fulfil this role, we plan to publish the education destinations of pupils from Key Stage 4 for all mainstream schools, including Academies, for the first time in May 2012.From September, schools will be placed under a duty to secure access to independent and impartial careers guidance for their pupils. The guidance must include information on the full range of 16-18 education and training options. Statutory guidance will set expectations about the type and quality of support schools should offer under the new duty.
