Unemployment: North-east

- To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what assessment he has made of the effect of reductions in public expenditure on the rate of female unemployment in the north east.

No specific assessment has been made. However, the number of women aged 16 to 64 in work in the north-east has remained stable over the last year, while the number not in work has fallen slightly both in absolute terms and as a proportion of the population. Within this, female unemployment has risen by 6,000 on the year, to 57,000, driven by falling inactivity—down 7,000, to 266,000—as more women have joined the labour force.
