Mr. Bradley: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many people were on (a) youth training and youth credits and (b) modern apprenticeship schemes (i) on average for 1994-95 and (ii) at the last date for which figures are available.[21089] Mr. Paice: On average in 1994-95, there were 278,000 people on youth training in Great Britain. In December 1995, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 284,500 people on YT in Great Britain. As modern apprenticeship prototypes did not begin until September 1994, it is not possible to give an average figure for the full financial year 1994-95. However, on 7 April 1995 according to training and enterprise council estimates 1,393 people had started modern apprenticeships in the 17 prototype TECs in England. In December 1995, the latest date for which figures are available, there were over 16,000 people on modern apprenticeships in Great Britain. However, the numbers are growing rapidly and there are currently estimated to be over 20,000 on modern apprenticeships.
