Answer: Mr. Menzies Campbell: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the effects of Commonwealth sanctions on Nigeria; and if he will make a statement.[29848] Mr. Hanley: I refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave the hon. Member for Broxtowe (Sir J. Lester) on 9 May 1996 at column 211. If Nigeria does not respond positively to the Commonwealth ministerial action group's invitation to dialogue by the end of May, the group has recommended that Commonwealth countries adopt a package of measures broadly similar to those already taken by the EU.
