Answer

Mr. Llew Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales on how many occasions since 1 January 1990 consent conditions applied to effluent treatment plants in Wales have been contravened; and what steps have been taken to remedy the pollution. [40525] Mr. Jonathan Evans: I refer the hon. Member to tables 13.1 to 13.3 in the "Environmental Digest for Wales No. 9 1996" published by the Welsh Office, a copy of which is in the Library of the House. Under the Water Resources Act 1991 and the Environment Act 1995, the Environment Agency has a wide range of powers to tackle aquatic pollution.
